AR At Edgerton

Edgerton Elementary - Accelerated Reader

______________________________

Accelerated Reader, also known as AR, is used in many different ways throughout the Puyallup School District. The staff at Edgerton is committing to using this tool as explained below. This plan follows the expectations of the school district.

¨ Accelerated Reader is a supplemental reading program that should occur outside of the 90 minute core instructional reading block. Its purpose is to support individual reading practice and is not intended for instruction.

¨ Accelerated Reader should promote student choice and, thus, help create a lifetime love of reading.

¨ Accelerated Reader points earned should not be used as a part of a student’s grade. However, the information from assessment results may be used to measure and monitor progress on Essential Academic Learning Requirement 4 for the student to set goals and evaluate his or her own progress.

Guidelines for Using AR at Edgerton:

- Book choice will be determined primarily by student interest and maturity levels. ZPD will be flexible and used broadly as a guide only. (students allowed to read good literature below their level, encouraged to read at their maturity level, able to read books above their level when interest and prior knowledge is high)
- Teachers will use the goal setting and certification levels in the AR program to track student’s progress toward their reading goals.
- Rewards will not be based on points. Rewards may be given for reaching reading goals and/or certification levels. Using the Certification Level certificates from the AR program is strongly encouraged.
- The library will be arranged according to standard Dewey order. Teaching students how to access materials in all libraries is part of a strong library curriculum. The location of books will not be changed according to AR level.
